DER WIDERHALL DES AUFBEGEHRENS
long-durational performance
Der Widerhall des Aufbegehrens
The composition "Der Widerhall des Aufbegehrens" (engl. „The Resonance of Defiance") is a radical sound performance that questions societal power structures and cultural gender roles. It focuses on the taboo of female and queer anger and makes it the central form of expression. The performance presents a queer female read body who does not strive to conform to societal expectations of gentleness or restraint but rather executes an angry, even aggressive act by repeatedly and forcefully striking a drum with a whip.
The act is loud, untamed, and penetrating. The sound of the drumbeat fills the space with raw, physical energy. The artist embodies a radical yet controlled presence, deliberately challenging the ideal of the passive or submissive woman. Through the relentless, aggressive strikes, they break out of the role assigned to them and, with each sound, demands the space and the audience to acknowledge her presence.
An invisible machine records each drumbeat and replays the sounds with a delay. With each new strike, the fresh sounds blend with the repetitions of the past. The space becomes a resonating body, reflecting the rebellion not unchanged but layered, distorted, and anesthetized. The raw violence of the strikes loses its immediacy over time and is filtered through the space, much like how societal structures treat female and queer aggression: they reflect it, but in a weakened or distorted form.
The performance continues until the drum reaches its breaking point and is destroyed. The traces of the strikes, both acoustically and visually (through a screen on each of the four sides), remain.
